Genesis 3: A Bad Impact Story:

Compilation by M.Hanglberger (www.hanglberger-manfred.de)

1.

3,17

To the man he said: "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat, "Cursed be the ground because of you! In toil shall you eat its yield all the days of your life.

18 Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, as you eat of the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat, Until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; For you are dirt, and to dirt you shall return."

23 The LORD God therefore banished (the man) from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he had been taken.

24 When he expelled the man, …

The cursing of the earth:

• The earth is now regarded as Satan's dominion.

• Everything "earthly", everything "worldly", everything "material", everything corporeal, ... now has the smell of the negative.

• There is a curse on everything.

• Pleasure and joie de vivre are frowned upon for Christians.

• Contempt for the world, flight from the world, renunciation of the world become demands for the believer.

• The orientation of the Christians to the hereafter gave a lot of scope for the mighty of the world to exercise their power in politics, economy and the church.

• Before the 2nd Vatican Council, Christians in the main churches were hardly committed to a more just and humane world.

• Christians were not champions of the integrity of creation, of environmental protection, and of animal welfare.

• The world is seen as a place of banishment, a place of punishment.

• In an official prayer, the world is even considered a “Valley of Tears” ("Salve Regina")

2.

3,13

The LORD God then asked the woman, "Why did you do such a thing?" The woman answered, "The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it."

16 To the woman he said: "I will intensify the pangs of your childbearing; in pain shall you bring forth children. Yet your urge shall be for your husband, and he shall be your master."

17 To the man he said: "Because you listened to your wife … Cursed be the ground because of you! …

The devaluation of women:

• The woman is considered the dangerous seductress.

• She is later seen as the door-opener that gave the devil access to dominion in the world.

• She is seen as the weak one who succumbs to the temptations of the devil more than men.

• She is considered particularly badly punished by the labor pains of childbirth.

• “Cursed the man who listens to his wife.”

=> Particularly detailed "bridal blessing" in

previous marriage rite (sounds like exorcism)

=> No sacrament of consecration for women

=> Fear of the church superiors before the women

3.

3,16

To the woman he said: … “Yet your urge shall be for your husband, and he shall be your master."

Devaluation of sexuality:

• Sexual desire is seen as a punishment for disobedience and a cause for man's dominance over woman.

• This dominion of man over woman is seen as a punishment intended by God.

• This is why later in the church, even in the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century, equal rights for men and women in society are firmly rejected!

• The church teacher Augustine (+430 AD) explained that Satan works directly in sexual desire.

• So sexual desire is totally demonized.

• This is later also used as an argument for the celibacy of priests.

• For married couples it means that every sexual intercourse without the intention of procreation is a serious sin and

• the greater the pleasure in procreating a child, the more original sin is transmitted.

4.

3,11

Then (God) asked, … "You have eaten, then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!"

17 To the man he said: "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat”, …

Devaluation of maturity and personal responsibility:

• Obedience becomes the most important moral and religious requirement.

• Disobedience becomes the worst sin.

• No promotion of independence and personal responsibility.

• Subservience and obedience thinking causes a lot of incapacitating exercise of power in the church, coercion, paternalism, fear-mongering, ...

• The use of one's own senses, one's own perception, one's own powers of reason, one's own decision-making competence is devalued.

5.

All suffering, toil and death are punishments from God for man's sin:

-thorns and thistles

-The toil of working in the fields

-The toil of pregnancy

-The labor pains of childbirth

-The poisonous snakes

-The death

Reduction of man's need for redemption to the problem of sinfulness:

• All suffering in the world and all problems in the world are associated with man's sinfulness.

• As a result, there is no realistic and thorough research into the causes and, accordingly, no helpful solutions to problems.

• The Christian worship deals almost exclusively with sin, guilt and forgiveness of sins (dramatic atrophy!).

The wide range of sufferings and worries are excluded.

• Not responsibility and maturity, but feelings of guilt and inferiority are promoted.

6.

Objective: Avoidance of sin: Reduction of creativity and willingness to take risks:

• If the main concern of Christianity and the Christian Worship are deliverance from guilt and sin, "avoidance of sin" becomes the main concern of any Christian way of life.

• Such piety does not promote creativity, responsibility for the world, spiritual growth and problem-solving skills.

• Because those who act also make mistakes. Anyone who does not act, but only fulfills church participation requirements (Sunday duty, duty of confession, ... ), does not make mistakes so easily.

7.

3,19b

“For you are dirt, and to dirt you shall return."

Death is demonized:

• Death is understood as a consequence of the sin of disobedience.

• Disobedience to a divine commandment - the meaning of which is not even comprehensible - is considered a deadly crime.

8.

2,17

From that tree (tree of knowledge of good and bad) you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die."

3,4 But the serpent said to the woman: …

3,5 No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad."

3,22
Then the LORD God said: "See! The man has become like one of us, knowing what is good and what is bad! …”

Knowledge and conscience are demonized:

• A striving for knowledge that enables maturity and independent decisions of conscience (distinguishing between good and evil) appears as a crime against God.

• Immaturity, dependent status and spiritual and emotional dependence are considered pleasing to God and are therefore to be promoted by the church.

Man appears as a rival of God -

as a threat to God and his power:

• God seems indignant about man's newly acquired divine ability to recognize good and evil.

·   • God seems to begrudge man this ability and the mental and emotional maturity associated with it.
